Planning and design training
The Urban Imprint team have a strong track record of delivering a wide variety of town planning and urban design training sessions for all ages and abilities. If you’re looking for an introduction to a specific topic or a day-long course, we can develop a session specifically for you. Our team all regularly contribute to the town planning and urban design courses at the University of Manchester (where Bob is a honourary lecturer) as well as the landscape architecture course at Manchester Metropolitan University. We have contributed to a wide range of training events for planning and development professionals throughout the UK and Europe including CPD sessions for the RTPI and Urban Design Group.
In addition to this, we offer workshops to community groups to encourage informed engagement with the planning system. Previously these have focused on: setting out how they can comment on planning applications; what sort of points (planning matters) will make a more effective representation; how to best use planning policy; and what to expect more generally from the process.
Some of our most popular topics and themes:
- An introduction to town planning
- An introduction to urban design
- Engaging local people with planning policy
- Commenting on a planning application
- How to engage with the local planning and policies
- Delivering contextually responsive design
- Delivering effective planning and design reports
- Developing your urban design skills
- Developing your site assessment skills
- Site walkovers with informal Q&A
“A totally professional service given in a friendly manner. We have gained enormously from their expert guidance and support”

Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Project Management event
Our director, Bob, ran an online webinar on ‘Project Management for planners’ as part of the national masterclass training series. This focused on the role of project management and following its success, he has been booked in for more in the future.
Block the Block
We hosted an online workshop for residents of Hulme who wished to respond to consultation for a scheme for purpose-built student accommodation. This workshop supported their ongoing campaign and aimed to encourage effective engagement with the planning application process. It provided them with the opportunity to ask questions to aid in the preparation of their own representation letters.
If you have a project you wish to discuss, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
